Once seal pups have completed a 21 day stay in an isolation tub, are in stable condition and free of disease pathogens, they are moved to the first of four large pools. As they gain weight, endurance and learn to eat whole fish, they graduate to our largest pool (18’), where human contact is reduced to a minimum.

Water quality in our pools is a constant challenge. Various combinations of vortex separators, bio-filters, high rate sand filters and ultra violet sterilization are employed.

When a pup has reached a weight of 50 to 60 pounds, has achieved optimal health and feeds freely on herring tossed into the pool, they are ready to be considered for release back into the wild.
